DON’T BE FOOLED BY LOW QUALITY DIRT CHEAP CHINESE TURBOS.
A company called SSAutochrome and also goes by XS Power…
According to our investigation, evidence strongly supports the claim that they have been dumping inferior turbos into the U.S. market for prices so low it makes business for legitimate turbo dealers difficult. We lived and let lived until they stepped on our toes, now we’re going to use publicly available facts to expose them for what they are—a turbo dealer that is wrought with problems: 1) Integrity problems, 2) Quality problems, and 3) Customer service problems.
1. Integrity problem
Almost two years ago my company developed a high quality and reliable aftermarket upgrade turbo for DSM cars called the Evo 3 GT. Soon after releasing the product in January 2005 my dealers started receiving calls and emails from people complaining that their “Evo 3 GT” failed. These were customers from Ebay who said they bought an “Evo 3 GT” for a price that was different than my product's price. We investigated and discovered that another company was violating our common law trademark and calling their product by our name “Evo 3 GT.” They knew that they could benefit from the brand recognition we created for our aftermarket Evo 3 GT so they just started using our name. First offense.
We brought to their attention that their use of our name was confusing both our customers, and asked them to stop using our name. They ignored our request. Second offense.
Since they chose to continue to violate our name, they have forced us to put up this webpage to expose these people so that our customers will no longer be confused. On this page we will not draw any spurious conclusions, instead will only stick to the undisputable facts and testimoney from their real-life vicitims.
SSAutochrome's Better Business Bureau file backs up many of our concerns with this company, also known as XS Power.
As the text will point out: "The Bureau processed a total of 24 complaints about this company in the last 36 months, our standard reporting period. Of the total of 24 complaints closed in 36 months, 11 were closed in the last year." That's less then half complaints being resolved!
2. Quality Problem
Judging by their feedback on Ebay, testimonials found in chat rooms, and our own expert inspection, it shouldn’t be hard to find a customer who has experienced a failed SSAutochrome/XS Power turbo and received no customer support thereafter.
See what happened to this poor customer, his XS Power turbo cracked in half after 30 miles!
From our own inspection of a T3/T4 turbo they sent us from China (Not Taiwan, but Mainland China), found many red flags:
BAD COMPRESSOR WHEEL
See balancing of this SS Autochrome/XS Power wheel (Left) versus our BBL wheel (Right).
Notice the deep interior grooves? This is a low-cost balancing technique that drills too deep into the thin portion of the wheel causing in the shaved portion of the wheel to break off from the heat, vibration, and centripetal force under boost conditions causing catastrophic turbo failure.
Furthermore, notice how much metal was cut; this is an indication that the wheel came out of the mold highly out of specification, so that much metal was cut out to compensate during balancing.
Notice the technique used by Garrett, MHI, and BBL on the right, where a small amount of metal is shaved from the outer edge of the wheel, providing proper balance and not compromising the structural integrity of the wheel.
Also, the compressor wheel is not drilled to within acceptable perpendicular tolerance causing the wheel to wobble inside the housing. This is easy to see when placed onto a balancing machine at low speeds (as demonstrated below).
Notice the chips and scrapes on the edges of the wheel? This is sloppy assembly work, plain and simple, the kind of work done by a factory with poor quality control. This is a quality lapse you’d never find from a major turbo brand or our high quality aftermarket factory in Taiwan.
See the impurity on the turbine shaft. When the steel was poured into the mold there was an impurity in the steel which caused this divot. This divot will destroy the bearing and result in catastrophic turbo failure.
See the true gauge reading on the left from the XS Power bearing housing. On the right we show the reading from the Garrett standard for this model of T3-T4. Notice how out of spec the SSAutochrome piece is. This will cause instability in the shaft and at full boost will cause catastrophic turbo failure.
3. Customer Service Problem
We back our real Evo 3 GT 100%. We’ll take your calls. We’ll replace the turbo if it has a problem. We’ll even pay you $150 for reinstallation if your Evo 3 GT goes bad. SSAutochrome won’t even take your calls! See their contact policy below:
What kind of company won’t even take your calls?
And judging by their feedback on eBay, they don’t take kindly to emails either unless you’re buying something. Rather than taking responsibility for their failed products they display indifference at best, impudence more often than not.
See their feedback, there are some common themes: "You get what you pay for," "turbo kit did not fit an exclipse RIP OFF!!," "the seal blew out while the turbo was idling...," "holes didn't fit up," "worst products ever," etc etc etc.
